CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS PLANNING & MANAGEMENT
Planning Process
The benefits of developing a crisis communications plan are immeasurable. The crisis communications planning process is fairly straightforward, but actually writing the plan can be quite complex. The planning process involves the following steps.

• Select a crisis communications brainstorming team.
The team should represent a cross-section of the company so that each department can provide input into potential crisis situations that might arise.

• Schedule a brainstorming session.
This entails a half-day to full-day session in which the team identifies every imaginable crisis situation that could befall the company. The operations manager should be in attendance with, ideally, the company’s emergency response plan at their fingertips. Once we’ve inventoried a full spectrum of crisis situations, we then categorize these for the communications plan. The operational and communications crisis plans should complement and support one another.

• Write the crisis communications plan.
This typically takes 4-10 weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the organization and resulting crisis plan. The document provides a succinct introduction regarding first steps and messaging for emergency situations (tailored for your company), followed by detailed instructions, messaging and contact lists indexed by ‘types’ of crisis scenarios.

The single most important ingredient in crisis management is crisis planning.
